ENGLISH VERSION |

Vahagni:

Tigran-Tovmasyan-4

- Vahagni, could you please describe your music in 3 words.
Vahagni: Past, present, future. At least that’s what I think is in the creative subconscious. Using the knowledge and what you have learned, being in the present and always thinking ahead. If you’re asking about genres, my music comes from Flamenco, Armenian, progressive and compositional forms.

- Do you only play the guitar?
Vahagni: I fool around at the piano for harmonies, I play a little percussion, sing in the shower. But, my instrument is the guitar, and it’s plenty to take up all of my attention and time.

- How much does your guitar cost?
Vahagni: I have many guitars, good guitars run anywhere from 4-8 thousand dollars.

- How much time does it take to write a musical composition? And which things or persons inspire you?
Vahagni: I don’t have a formula for composing, it’s always different. Sometimes a piece is written and completed in a few days other times a year or more. I have compositions I’m working on now that I started maybe 4 years ago. Everything from the good to the bad inspires me. I think life is the biggest inspiration, being alive and present.

- Do you have favorite music compositions among your owns?
Vahagni: I don’t have favorites. I have a perfectionist and dissatisfied personality with my music. I’m always consumed with what I am working on in the present, when it’s finished I get tired of it and move on to the next thing, like a child with his toys.

- Which kind of music do you listen when you want to relax?
Vahagni: Silence.

- Perfect answer! J But which kind of music do you like?
Vahagni: I like all kinds of music, I don’t believe too much in genres as these days everything is changing. I always love listening to classical music, folk, electronic, just about everything. Music is music. The ideas and imagination and ability to express and present the music is what matters most I think.

- When did you understand that music is your mission and chose it as your profession?
Vahagni: I don’t remember a time like that. I grew up with it and it was never a conscious decision. It’s just always been this way.

- Which is the role of your parents in it? As I know your parents are artists: father was a guitar soloist for the National Philharmonic of Armenia and mother was a theatrical actress.
Vahagni: My father is the reason I am a guitarist and a musician. He was and is very important in my development as well as my mother. They are both my teachers and amazing artists.

- How often do you travel? Which type of tours do you prefer? I think travelling can change a person. When you travel and learn the culture, weltanschauung of other people you change yourself. What do you think about it?
Vahagni: I’m always on the road lately, I prefer tours that have little breaks to come home in between. One does learn a lot about different cultures and I think it is a good thing. It gives you a different perspective on the world.

- There are 3 countries you lived in: Armenia, Spain and USA. Where is your native land and your home?
Vahagni: I was born in Yerevan, Armenia and moved to the States in 1991 with my family when I was 6. Then I left to Spain at 18 to study and returned. I have been living in Los Angeles most of my life. But, I am Armenian and Armenia is my native land and my culture is very important for me.

- How many times have you been in Armenia? Have you given concerts there?
Vahagni: I visited 2 times after I left in 1991. I have not played concerts there but it is something I want to do soon.

- Which was the impression from Armenia, Armenian people and Armenian music?
Vahagni: I loved being in Armenia, it was also a little hard to see some of the people and their hardships, but I’m sure it’s better now. Armenian music is something that is in my everyday life, I grew up listening to it and still do, I also play a lot of my own arrangements of Armenian folk music.

- Which kind of Armenian music do you like? Which Armenian singers and groups do you like? And which ones don’t you?
Vahagni: I like Armenian folk music, it’s the purist and has the most meaning and identity in it. Not to say it’s only about folk music, I think pop music and other genres are very important too, but to be honest what I have heard from Armenian pop is very sad, if it’s not distorted with Turkish, Arabic or Persian melodies and modes, it’s a poor copy of other kinds. We really need good Armenian pop music for the younger generations, but it has to come from us, our music, our culture, which is very rich. Not that there is anything wrong with Arabic or Persian music, I think it’s is very important and very old and rich as well, but it’s not ours and has nothing to do with what is ours, that’s all. I don’t like any singers today. We have amazing musicians, but singers in the pop or none folk world are scarce. Maybe there are some great ones out there but I have not heard anything yet.

- What do you think about Armenian culture and traditions?
Vahagni: I love our culture, but the real and important culture that is in our blood, not the distorted and conformist approach that you see more and more, like in weddings and ceremonies. We seem to be letting go of it or maybe forgetting what and who we are. Our culture is Komitas, Tumanyan, Narekatsi, Saryan, Charents etc. At least that’s my culture.

- Which things do you hate?
Vahagni: Things I hate: vinegar, bad music, carelessness, going to the dentist, ignorance, the cold (or being cold), shaving.

- Which rules do you infringe?
Vahagni: What kind of rules? I never follow the rules, rules have always been a suggestion or an opinion for me. There are only a hand full of rules that really matter in life anyway, and you don’t have to be very smart to know them.

- Which are the main attainments in your life? Are you proud of yourself? How do you think what is the formula (algorithm) of success in life & in musical career?
Vahagni: I’m proud of being a part of a good family, being my wife’s partner, having great friends and being surrounded with a lot of love and inspiration. Being a successful musician is like anything else, knowing who you are, believing in who you are, always working on growing, and willing to fight and sacrifice for your goals. Just like being a successful person, it’s a never ending journey.

- Your plans & dreams?
Vahagni: My plans or dreams are very simple. I would like to grow and discover as much as possible as a musician, and live alongside the people who matter most to me in life as long as I can.

- Currently you have 3 studio albums. Are you working on a new album?
Vahagni: I am working on my fourth album which I will begin recording in September of this year. I am doing a Kickstarter. I chose this approach because I feel that my 3 previous albums were always in the hands of others and I never had the control I wanted to push my music and promote it the right way so that it could have a chance and a platform to stand on. The repertoire will feature mostly my compositions and an arrangement of an Armenian folk piece. I am planning on a lot of collaborations and certain parts will be recorded in Spain, Armenia and most of it in Los Angeles. I have one month to get it all finished so wish me luck! The album will be followed by a tour in Japan in December/January for the Japanese release and I will begin the concerts and promos internationally in 2015 for the new album.
